About the event

Through astounding research and fascinating storytelling, SHOULDER TO SHOULDER transports us through time and into the world of queer solidarity movements, bringing their tales to life and exploring both the inexplicable joys and brutal realities of their fights for justice.

The book spans six decades of movements, from disability justice and sex workers’ rights, to the Black Panthers coalition with the Gay Liberation Front and the interlinked fights for trans liberation and reproductive justice. SHOULDER TO SHOULDER shows how marginalised activists have always been intertwined in their pursuit of joint liberation.

A beautiful celebration of our often chaotic, and always messy, human history and those incredible, ordinary people who pushed for equality no matter the cost. SHOULDER TO SHOULDER is for anyone who loved BAD GAYS, NATIVES or POVERTY SAFARI and is hungry for a fresh perspective on our shared human history.

Doors will open at 6:30pm for a 7pm start.

There will be a reading from Shoulder to Shoulder, followed by a conversation between author Jake Hall and The Scarlett Letters' founder Marin Scarlett about sex workers in queer history. This will be followed by Q&A and book signing!

About the author: Jake Hall is a freelance journalist, public speaker and author of The Art of Drag, published by Nobrow Press in September 2020. For the last six years they have been writing extensively on queer culture, drag history, sex work and harm reduction, all through the lens of leftist politics. They have also worked in-house for publications including The Independent and MEL Magazine, an LA-based online culture magazine which delves deep into masculinity, sex and porn through a witty, light-hearted lens.
